The author presents clinical vignettes of addicted patients struggling with the function of authority, in their internal world as well as in their interpersonal relationships. Through these different clinical situations, the author first questions the conditions of a sufficient authority over oneself. The author then evokes the different relationships maintained with representatives of authority among patients hospitalized in a rehabilitation clinic. Finally, the article seeks to determine the conditions of an institutional framework favoring the exercise of therapeutic authority.
