Comment rendre présent hors de la monumentalité des mémoriaux l’héritage du passé ? Comment faire entendre la contemporanéité de la parole des témoins ? En quoi l’artiste peut-il aider une société à se confronter à la violence sans la répéter ? Ce sont ces questions qu’Esther Shalev-Gerz, artiste internationale vivant à Paris, aborde dans son entretien. À partir de quelques œuvres emblématiques de sa démarche créatrice, notamment sur la mémoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, elle explicite comment son travail cherche à interroger la position de celui/celle qui regarde, mais aussi à rendre, par la vidéo et le son, la densité de l’expression de celui/celle qui parle, jusque dans ses « moments de non-parole ». Dans les œuvres d’E. Shalev-Gerz, l’artiste apparaît comme un éveilleur qui invite à ressentir l’expérience de la disparition et propose de « nouvelles mythologies ».

How can we insert the legacy of the past into the present and create new forms of memorials? How can the words of the witnesses be turned into contemporary speech ? How can the artist bring people to confront violence without re-enacting the violence ? These are the issues that Esther Shalev-Gerz, an international artist living in Paris, discusses in her interview. Based on a few emblematic works that show her creative approach, and on the memory of witnesses, notably those of the Second World War and of contemporary historical events, she explains how her work questions the viewpoint of the viewer but also takes into account, through video sound and sculpture, the multi-layered density of the expression of the speaker, right down to his/her “moments of non-speech.” In the works of Shalev-Gerz, the artist appears as an awakener who invites us to feel and witness the experience of the Other by shifting preconceived notions about how we perceive reality and act out “the mythology of here and now.”
