Cet article propose d’interroger les changements de terminologie et appels aux changements sémantiques et rhétoriques à l’œuvre ces dernières années dans le champ du vieillissement. Le bannissement de mots du vocabulaire est-il une réelle avancée pour réduire la stigmatisation ? Il est mis en lumière la tension contradictoire entre d’une part un effort pour réduire la violence symbolique de certains vocables, réalisé selon divers procédés, et d’autre part la permanence d’effets stigmatisants qui ne parviennent pas à être éradiqués. Changer les mots, est-ce suffisant pour changer le regard sur la vieillesse ?

This article examines the changes in terminology and calls for semantic and rhetorical transformation at work in recent years in the field of ageing. Is banning words from the vocabulary a real step towards reducing stigma? It highlights the contradictory tension between, on the one hand, an effort to reduce the symbolic violence of certain words, carried out according to various methods, and, on the other hand, the permanent stigmatising effects that fail to be eradicated. Is changing the words enough to change the way growing old is perceived?
