The jouissance of the sportsperson

The body’s jouissance (which translates roughly as “enjoyment”) symbolizes the Other and makes it possible to separate the subject from his or her body, so that he or she is not alienated within it. However sport seems to involve having control of the body. Nevertheless it is a semblance attached to an impredicative objectalization of the body. This objectalization involves Freud’s gain de jouissance (enjoyment gain [Lacan’s plus-de-jouir surplus enjoyment]). This is enough to show that if the body is indeed an object, it is as an object of jouissance, subject to a duty to exist phallically and separately from the body’s materiality. This separation is a transaction between this phallic function of jouissance and the objectalization of the body, a separation that passes through. (This is a Freudian principle, because there is only a body once the Father has been incorporated as a phallic function).
