Alexander Grothendieck, the path of a mathematician who worked on the “One”

Alexander Grothendieck was a famous mathematician who completely renewed the approach to mathematics. In a set of autobiographical reflections entitled Récoltes et semailles, written between 1983 and 1985, Grothendieck explored in a precise and complex way what mathematics and the scientific world meant to him. Page after page, he described his relationship to mathematics and the subjective logic at work in his research: both a creative force and an extraction from the subject, between chaos and an attempt to order the world. His reflections tell us about the way in which this subjective construction was a necessary support to him. They explore the uniquess that lies at the heart of scientific discovery. Reading his reflection, we formulate the hypothesis that this mathematical work was a never-ending attempt to translate into knowledge a Real that was imposed upon him, as well as a quest for a mythical unity where writing took center stage.
