Pregnancy and becoming a parent represent a period of transition in any psychic life be it an individual or a groupe one. Parenthood is one of the components of the identity of the subject, in that it transforms it and adds to the intersubjective dynamic. But, before being parental, the couple is first conjugal and it is the expectation and the arrival of the child that forms the basis of the “family” entity. For both men and women who are about to become parents, pregnancy and birth condense the project and desire for a child, the wait for this child, and conscious and unconscious fantasies about the unborn child and parental roles. Psychological and identity changes are studied in depth from the perspective of the mother but what happens within the man who becomes a father? How are conjugal identity and paternal identity linked during this period, and how do they readjust? Investigating the psychopathology of parenthood enable us to identify the stumbling blocks on the way to becoming a perent, and shows us how this development requires a close conjunction between conjugal and parental dimensions. We will examine this issue using a clinical case, highlighting the dialectics of conjugal and parental dynamics at the time of becoming a father.
