A Plea for the Conducting of Group Psychotherapy with Refugees

Mental Health studies have demonstrated the psychic vulnerability of migrants and refugees. In France, reception services have mainly been organized on the initiative of the voluntary sector, in the absence of any political policy for reception and care. For the refugees from South-East Asia who flowed into in the 13th district of Paris in the 1980s, a specialized consultation was organized, based on anthropological data, in a voluntary association participating in the public service (ASM13). Subsequently, a psychotherapy group was set up (2005–2014) in response to the impasses met with in individual care. The way in which this group was conducted, initially using cultural mediations, moved it toward a psychoanalytic psychotherapy setting. We petition for the promotion of this type of setting in public psychiatry for the reception and care of migrants and refugees.
