La dénonciation récente des pratiques de certains Ehpad a visé entre autres l’exercice du métier d’aide-soignante sans le diplôme d’État (DE) associé à ce métier. Or l’existence de « faisant fonction » n’est ni nouvelle ni exceptionnelle. « Faire fonction » a longtemps été accepté comme mode d’exercice transitoire, inscrit dans un processus de sélection en vue d’accéder à la formation d’aide-soignante. La validation des acquis de l’expérience (VAE) en a même fait un moyen d’apprendre sur le tas, susceptible de conduire à développer des compétences équivalentes à celles qu’on peut acquérir en formation. On constate cependant que les faisant fonction qui se présentent en VAE du DE d’aide-soignante n’ont eu pour la plupart aucune autre expérience que celle du travail auprès des personnes âgées. Pourtant, celui-ci ne se fait pas toujours dans les conditions qui permettraient de développer toutes les compétences du métier. Même si elles aspirent au diplôme, les faisant fonction d’aide-soignante exercent en réalité de façon durable, sous ce statut. À observer celles qui tentent d’obtenir le diplôme par la VAE, il apparaît qu’entre les tâches réalisées de façon non conforme et celles qui ne sont jamais faites, les faisant fonction ne font parfois qu’illusion d’aides-soignantes en dépit de toute leur bonne volonté.

Recent criticism of the practices of some residential care homes included the practice of unqualified nursing assistants. However, the presence of unqualified people acting as nursing assistants is neither new nor exceptional. For a long time, acting as a nursing assistant without degree was accepted as a transitional mode of practice, part of a selection process to gain access to nursing assistant training. Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) has even made it a means of learning on the job, likely to lead to the development of skills equivalent to those that can be acquired in schooling. However, most of those applying for the APEL qualification for the nursing assistant’s diploma have had no experience other than working with the elderly. However, this does not always take place in conditions that would enable them to develop all the skills of the profession. Even if they aspire to a diploma, unqualified nursing assistants actually work on a long-term basis under this status. If we look at those who are trying to obtain the diploma through the APEL, considering the tasks performed in a non-compliant manner and those that are never done, the unqualified nursing assistants are sometimes nothing more than the illusion of being nursing assistants, despite all their good will.
