Faced with the pervasiveness of evaluation as a dominant online form and practice, this article proposes a semiotic analysis of the devices and brands that underpin it. The prototypical actant, the search engine and its algorithm, deploy an underlying evaluative classification. But the web as a whole encourages users to “like,” score, or comment on all items of content. The digital space is a field of constant evaluative activity, blending scores and opinion, which greatly conditions how discourse is received by according it a specific “exponent,” or its overall evaluation by third-party users. This article uses Greimasian semiotics to update, in terms of both process (manipulation, action, sanction) and values, the different evaluative praxes in which all Internet users are invited to participate, and uses tensive semiotics to analyze the quantities at work in this vast docimology where both evaluator and evaluation eventually become subject to evaluation.
