Le réveil des communautés chiites du Proche-Orient depuis trente ans est un événement majeur de la géopolitique de cette vaste région. Ainsi est apparu le slogan du croissant chiite, lequel consisterait en un ensemble de régions à dominante chiite situées de l’Afghanistan à la Méditerranée (Liban), articulé autour de l’Iran. Ce croissant chiite contrôlerait la quasi-totalité des ressources en hydrocarbures (gaz, pétrole) ainsi que leur évacuation vers les pays consommateurs et constituerait ainsi la « grande menace» pour l’Occident. Slogan, mythe ou réalité, telle est la problématique de l’article qui s’écarte autant d’une approche « délirante» du fait chiite que de son ignorance. La vraie question n’est-elle pas celle de l’instrumentalisation des communautés chiites par un Iran en montée de puissance visant à asseoir une hégémonie régionale?

The Shia crescent: slogan, myth or reality? The awakening of Shia communities in the Middle East in the past 30 years is a major geopolitical event in this vast region. Thus the Shia crescent slogan was created and would consist in a group of regions of Shia dominance situated from Afghanistan to the Mediterranean (Lebanon), articulated around Iran. This Shia crescent would control almost all hydrocarbon ressources (gaz, oil) as well as their evacuation towards consuming countries and constitute the “great menace” for the West. Slogan, myth or reality, in this lays the problematic of this article which strays from the “delirious” approach of the Shia fact as much as from its ignorance. Isn’t the real question the instrumentalization of Shia communities by a rising Iran aiming to create a regional hegemony?
