Il y a cinquante ans, en octobre 1970, le gouvernement brésilien avait lancé un vaste projet pour relier les régions du Nordeste à l’Amazonie par une route appelée Transamazônica (Transamazonienne), et un ensemble d’interventions gouvernementales visant à stimuler les flux migratoires et à attirer les investissements vers l’Amazonie. L’objectif central était l’occupation du territoire, l’expansion des activités économiques et l’accroissement démographique. Ce projet faisait partie de politiques territoriales fortement liées à une vision géopolitique classique. Cinquante ans après la construction de la route le front pionnier est toujours en mouvement et le gouvernement brésilien vise à terminer le projet au cours des deux prochaines décennies par de nouveaux projets dont des centrales hydroélectriques, pour consolider l’occupation.

Fifty years ago, in October 1970, the Brazilian government launched a vast project to connect the regions of the Northeast to the Amazon by a road called Transamazônica (Transamazonian), and a set of government interventions to stimulate migratory flows and attracting investment to the Amazon. The central objective was the occupation of the territory, the expansion of economic activities and population growth. This project was part of territorial policies strongly linked to a classic geopolitical vision, fifty years after the construction of the road the pioneer front is still moving forwards and the Brazilian government aims to complete the project within the next two decades by inserting new projects such as the construction of hydroelectric power stations, thus aiming to consolidate the occupation.
