RésuméAu Guatemala, les missions protestantes de courants évangéliques pentecôtistes ont connu une expansion significative au lendemain du tremblement de terre de 1976. La rapide diffusion de ces Églises reflète l’importance du rôle d’aide aux victimes dispensé par l’« évangélisme des catastrophes », l’efficacité des mécanismes de prosélytisme ainsi que l’engouement pour le message millénariste apocalyptique. Cette évolution zélée des organisations protestantes vers la fin des années septante et le début des années quatre-vingt, est toutefois caractérisé par des tensions au sujet de l’engagement social et politique dans la société guatémaltèque.

The diffusion and polarisation of Protestantism in Guatemala in the aftermath of the earthquake of 1976In Guatemala, the Protestant missions of the evangelical pentecostal tradition experienced a impressive growth in the years after the earthquake of 1976. The rapid development of these churches shows the importance of the famine relief that they provided, the effectiveness of their means of proselytism and the popularity of the apocalyptic millenarian message. But the zealous evolution of the Protestant organisations in the late seventies and early eighties was also characterised by tensions concerning political involvement in Guatemalan society.
