Conspiracy theories are a “solution” in the form of a projective defense mechanism, searching in outside sources for the perfect culprit to curb anxiety and turn away from real issues. Conspiracy feeds off official lies, letting anger flow into fantasies that are elevated to the rank of alternative truths: a fictional construction that endangers democracy. Between political and conspiratorial manipulation, between state perversion and paranoid fantasies, social networks lead the movement to the point of hysteria and deepen dissent.
