From the ideal father to the dream family: Exploring perceptions associated with fatherhood among Haitian fathers

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2023. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article aims to better understand perceptions associated with fatherhood among Haitian men who show difficulties related to the full investment of their paternity. We met with eleven fathers from different age groups, from different socioeconomic backgrounds, and living in different places in Haiti, so that they could participate in unstructured research interviews. A thematic analysis (Paillé and Mucchielli 2016) was used to reduce the data. The results offer a keen insight into the participants’ perception of an ideal family, an ideal mother, and an ideal child, as well as an ideal father. They also reveal the desire for a greater investment of their paternity among the participants. The discussion makes connections between the results and enlightening psychoanalytic concepts. Finally, the limits of the article and its contributions to research and to preventive intervention with fathers and Haitian families are discussed.
