La notion de discipline présente un caractère universel quand on entend désigner un corps de savoir entendu comme articulation d’un objet, d’une méthode et d’un programme, d’un côté, et comme mode d’occupation reconnaissable d’une configuration plus vaste de l’autre. Une discipline est un vaste réseau d’échanges de personnes, de notions et de flux de matière, mais elle s’inscrit dans des réticulations plus vastes qui supposent des modes d’articulation toujours instables. Si l’on pressent que le monde disciplinaire est en crise, on doit pourtant constater sa grande résilience, alors qu’un mode alternatif de production des connaissances n’est pas encore en vue.

Towards the end of the disciplinary model ?The idea of the discipline is universally accepted when it refers to a corpus of knowledge understood as the combination of an object, a method and a programme, on the one hand, and as a recognisable mode of occupation of a wider configuration on the other hand. A discipline is a broad network of exchanges of people, ideas and flows of material, but also forms part of a wider system of interconnections that are always looser and more unstable. There may be signs that the world of disciplines is heading for a crisis, but its resilience is patently clear and no alternative mode of knowledge production has yet emerged on the horizon.
