This article explores the importance of relationship and reflective dialogue for each participant in an infant mental health intervention: the infant, the parent(s), the infant mental health specialist and the supervisor. The awakening of the early developing parent-child relationship was the focus of the specialist’s observations and intervention. The therapeutic relationship between each parent and the specialist offered a corrective emotional experience or a safe base and became the instrument for change on behalf of the well-being of their baby. The supervisory relationship encouraged reflection and mirrored many of the principles and concepts underlying practice promoting infant mental health. It was within the reflective supervisory relationship that the specialist and the supervisor discovered what was fundamental about the power and centrality of relationship for babies, for families and for themselves.
