By studying both the common and technical meanings of echo in Greek thought, this article seeks to highlight the role that this notion played in the elaboration, by certain philosophers and physicians of the fifth century BC, of a theory of auditory perception (through the resonance of the body), and then in Plato’s formulation of a theory of persuasion (through the resonance of the soul).
