While being currently a matter of numerous inquiries in ancient history, taxation is complicated to define because of its technicality. With the help of works produced in the areas of French fiscal law and social psychology, the aim of this paper is to demonstrate the inadequacy of the often used definitions in the French language when applied to ancient history. A final glossary proposes some reflections in order to fuel the researches concerning ancient taxation.
