Joseph, l’époux de la Vierge Marie, fait pâle figure aux côtés de sa lumineuse épouse et de l’enfant Dieu. L’affaire des songes n’arrange pas sa notoriété, puisqu’aux moments les plus délicats qui inaugurent la vie de la future sainte famille, répudiation de sa future fiancée et massacre des innocents, il est raconté qu’« un ange lui apparaît en songe ». Faut-il y lire une pure intervention magique du divin, ce qui a été le mot d’ordre de bon nombre d’interprétations moralisantes ? Ou au contraire, cette image choisie par l’évangéliste n’est-elle pas une façon de traiter d’un débat de conscience, d’un retour en son intimité, débat à l’intérieur duquel Joseph aura à se décider soit à s’autoriser à la violence prescrite par la loi, soit à la refuser. Autrement dit, dire « non » relèverait de la décision libre de Joseph, sur lequel Dieu va pouvoir s’appuyer et non l’inverse. Le « non » permet en cette intimité de revenir à ce qui l’habite, à une manière de rester fidèle à soi.

And even weaker as it comes to dreaming, when, at the most sensitive times marking the beginning of the future holy family’s life, - his future fiancé to be repudiated and innocent lives slaughtered – we are told that « an angel appeared to him in a dream ». Should we read in it the purely magical intervention of the divine, as many moralizing interpretations insisted? Or is, on the contrary, that the evangelist chose this image as a way to illustrate a moral struggle, an intimate conflict through which Joseph will have to decide whether to allow himself the law-prescribed violence or to refuse it. In other words, saying « no » would rely on Joseph’s free will on which God will be able to lean, instead of the opposite. By saying « no » in this intimacy, he can go back to his inner self, and find a way to remain faithful to himself.

Giuseppe, lo sposo della Vergine Maria, è piuttosto pallido accanto alla luminosa sposa e al bambino Dio. L’affare dei sogni non gli facilita la notorietà, poiché nei momenti più delicati che inaugurano la vita della futura sacra famiglia, ripudio della futura sposa e strage degli innocenti, la storia racconta che “un angelo gli appare in sogno”. Bisogna leggervi un puro intervento magico del divino, secondo la parola d’ordine di numerose interpretazioni edificanti? O invece, l’immagine scelta dall’evangelista non è un modo di trattare un dibattito di coscienza, un ritorno nella propria intimità, dibattito all’interno del quale Giuseppe dovrà decidere se valersi della violenza prescritta dalla legge o rifiutarla. In altre parole, dire di no dipenderebbe dalla decisione libera di Giuseppe sulla quale Dio si potrà appoggiare e non il contrario. Il “no” gli permette in questa intimità di tornare a ciò che lo abita, a un modo di rimanere fedele a se stesso.
