Two inscriptions, from Lepcis magna and Avenches, attribute to Septimius Severus the title of conseruator orbis. They date back to immediately after the battle of Lyons (197), which gave him definitive control over the empire. These documents open up perspectives on the perception of major events during the civil war, and on the construction of Septimius Severus’ image in the years of his conquest of power.
