Advocating abolition: Abbé Bergier and Negroes from 1767 to 1789

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2016. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Abbé Bergier, whose anti-slavery stance has not as yet received very much attention, holds a singular place in the abolitionist debate. Bergier was the author of De la certitude des preuves du christianisme (1767) and the article negroes. slave. trade in the Encyclopédie méthodique, also representing Catholic anti-philosophical orthodoxy, being a canon of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, and the confessor of the daughters of King Louis XV. He thus publicised views which were incompatible with those of either the Kingdom of France or the Church. Those views related to skin colour as well as scientific, philosophical, ethical, economic (and therefore political) subjugation. His bold, absolute condemnation of slavery was unique, and paradoxically brought him closer to his enemies Jaucourt, Montesquieu, Diderot or Raynal.
