La France dispose d’un patrimoine architectural militaire riche et protéiforme, héritage de plus de deux mille ans d’histoire militaire. Au-delà de son intérêt architectural, culturel et historique, ce bâti a profondément imprégné la physionomie et l’organisation spatiale des villes. Il a ainsi constamment porté témoignage de la présence des militaires au cœur de la cité. Toutefois, si l’importance de l’architecture militaire dans la structuration urbaine et dans la mémoire collective apparaît aujourd’hui comme une évidence, sa reconnaissance en tant qu’objet patrimonial n’en est pas moins très récente. Par ailleurs, la redécouverte de ce patrimoine ancien va de pair avec la prise de conscience par l’institution militaire de l’importance de l’architecture militaire contemporaine comme outil de reconquête d’une visibilité urbaine.

France has an abundant and varied heritage of military architecture, handed down from over 2,000 years of military history. Over and above its architectural, cultural and historical interest, this built heritage has permeated the physiognomy and spatial organisation of its host cities. It has born constant witness to the presence of the military in the heart of the city. The importance of military architecture in the structuring of the city and in the collective memory appears patently obvious today, but its value as heritage has only recently been recognised. Moreover, the rediscovery of this ancient heritage goes hand-in-hand with the military institution’s growing awareness of the importance of contemporary military architecture as a tool for gaining fresh visibility in the urban landscape.
