The purpose of this article is to study the practices of commercial navigation on the Nile during the Hellenistic period. First, we study the environmental context, to identify the constraining and favorable factors for navigation in different regions of Egypt. Next, we deal with the practices of commercial shipping, starting from two well-documented case studies in the papyri of the Hellenistic period, the κέρκουρος and the προσαγωγίς. Finally, we examine the forms of public supervision of commercial navigation, in particular damage management, police control and the recording of movements of men and goods.
