Nous avons renoncé à la croyance en un critère objectif du beau ; nous savons que nous sommes maintenant installés dans le relativisme esthétique. Comment en sommes-nous arrivés à ne plus pouvoir justifier nos appréciations par un critère unique ? Faut-il regretter cette nouvelle situation ? Ne faut-il pas plutôt reconnaître qu’en elle se libèrent non seulement la diversité des goûts mais surtout celle des productions artistiques ?

We have given up believing in an objective criterion of beauty ; we know that we are now in an age of aesthetic relativism. How have we reached the point where we cannot justify our judgements by a common criterion? Is this new situation a cause for regret? Or should we instead recognize that this not only liberates the diversity of tastes but also gives greater freedom to artistic productions?
