In the face of today’s political rules, hospitality is not an invitation for a better life – at most, if offers a shelter – but a fully armed technological gate, serving as a limit and a threshold : « Here the civilized world begins : no trespassing ! » Hospitality, in it’s essence, is unconditional, contrary to all other forms of human society, which depend on conditions – laws. It is this unresolved tension between unconditional hospitality and the conditions imposed upon the act of hospitality that Derrida was the first one to urge us to reconsider. It’s only when I meet and recognize the other as pre-ceding me and what I know that the possibility of true hospitality emerges. The minute this is lost sight of – and assume that we are the ones who belong, while the other doesn’t, because s/he is the stranger, the one who asks (for citizenship, job, recognition, etc.), a power game sets in.There are two experiences – that, as a subject (ego), we cannot « think » completely : our birth and our death. In this special case, hospitality actually is the precondition to life. Hospitality, consequently, is rooted in the experience of death, of letting go, of abandoning everything you loved, acquired, imagined. Psychoanalysis offers hospitality not only to madness, but to the night inhabiting every human being. It is an opening not only to the unknown, within, but also to step towards inner freedom. Sometimes in a cure it’s possible to take shelter in a value of universality, to receed until this point where it’s no longer a matter of personal belief. Hospitality can becomes such a value of mere urgence to think and behold.
