Children and Their Parents during Marital Separation: The Role of the Co-parental Relationship

This article develops some thoughts relating to the experience and needs of children when confronted by their parents’ separation or divorce. Studies now highlight the necessity of adopting a contextual and dynamic approach to examine marital separation, defined in terms of a transition in family life, and considering the factors of risk and protection likely to explain the diversity of experiences and the ways children adapt to such events. Although the coparental relationship was only recently introduced into French research in human sciences, it appears as a central factor that, in our view, should attract greater attention from professionals working to provide accompaniment to families.
