Based on the results of research in training, the article aims to analyse the plurality of representations of a minority kind of separation: uncertainty. Considered as a relational breakdown between the person and the routines of everyday life, uncertainty involves a process of reconfiguring meaning and identity. This process can lead a person to see him/herself as the “ex” of him/herself. Pursuing this further, the article refers to an epistemological and methodological posture of a comprehensive-transactional type in order to explore identity transactions of young female students in situations of uncertainty. Four forms of separation and four figures of “ex” are envisaged in order to emphasise the diversity of action-oriented postures assumed during situations of uncertainty.
