Since 1998 the complete works (Œuvres complètes) of Montesquieu in 22 volumes (16 published, 2 forthcoming/in press, and 4 in preparation), produced by the Montesquieu Society, have entirely renewed the approach to this author’s œuvre and thought; the venture has profited from the invaluable light thrown up by the Chabannes gift of books and manuscripts (1994), as well as from a radical revamping of editorial methods. It also offers the example of parallel working on an enterprise (shared between the ENS Lyon and Huma-Num): the digital edition corrects, prolongs or improves, as is the case, the first works published in the complete works, which gives the opportunity to reflect on the complementarity of editions, their function and functionarlities.
