During her work listening to victims of domestic violence in a social phone call centre dedicated to their needs, the question of a sense of urgency arose in the author’s mind. How can she help the other person to think and continue herself to think when the sense of urgency felt by the other person overwhelms their own thinking processes? Relying on transference and counter-transference movements during five unique interviews, the sense of urgency experienced as threatening the subject's internal balance would play out, in the light of Bion's theory of thought, the “catastrophic change”: the emotional experience of the first encounter with the primary object, which the listener, like a mother “able to dream”, would limit and transform into an experience of tolerable frustration necessary for the emergence of thought.
