Men becoming fathers

The (psychic) pregnancy of fathers raises questions as to the psychic abilities of the man becoming a father to get to grips phantasmatically with a (psychic) body for three. The pre-oedipal father is potentially a joint partner in a co-construction for three people. While the place occupied by fathers with their baby and with their partner becoming a mother remains to be legitimised socially, fathers’ discussion groups can provide a framework for support to paternalisation. Based on their experience, the authors advance their ideas around three main approaches developed during group meetings of fathers in a nursery: the establishment and the legitimacy of the first father-mother-baby bonds, the desire and the taboo of a foster paternal breast for the triad, and the delivery of the father, where father mother-baby are a new (id)entity.
