Although their paths have crossed regularly, marital and family assistance specialities have different professional structures. Marriage and family counselling, family mediation or even marital and family therapy, which do not necessarily enter into contact with individuals, couples and families in the same way, are subject to external and internal tensions revealing the contemporary relations between institutions and families. In this exploratory article, the author proposes to sketch out the interprofessional boundaries between these professions. The latter can be considered as forms of support for therapy or empowerment, but also as a heterogeneous, even contradictory, component of family policing, agents of a new family normative order, between collaboration and soft coercion.
