Contact centres have existed in France for more than 30 years, providing a valuable resource when divorce turns sour, offering a “neutral” venue for the exercise of parental access rights and a vehicle to maintain or sometimes fashion the parent-child bond in fraught contexts. The author refers to a French case report on adults who describe their prior experience of such contact centres when they were children. From a psychodynamic perspective, she stresses the complexity of the intrapsychic and intersubjective issues involved and the role of the transitory envelope provided by the contact centre, but also points out the system’s limits.
