The In-Between in Adoption Abroad

The authors present the results stemming from a research centered on the effects of the failures in the symbolic socio-cultural boundaries relative to the practices of adoption abroad on the organizers of the family link. The clinical material on which this study takes support was collected from candidates for adoption, from foster parents and from children adopted abroad. The authors work under the assumption that these subjects who have suffer from a disrupted link in their filiation (the adopting couple because of the lack of procreation capacity and the child because of the abandonment) could therefore also suffer from a disruption in the symbolical codes proposed by culture in order to integrate this adoptive filiation link. The tools used were composed of interviews and projective methods. The results obtained open a way for understanding the situations of suffering on the link, which appear very often at the time of the adolescence of the child adopted abroad. They also allow thinking of the specificity of the listening and the measures of support proposed to these families.
