In the French legal system, the precautionary principle is intended to allow public authorities to handle uncertain risks that might affect the environment. However, it is becoming common, in Europe as well as in France, to refer to this principle to shape the responsible development of nanotechnologies. Indeed, these are complex, partially unpredictable, and enabling new technologies. These specific characteristics might nevertheless generate some new types of risk. Existing regulations should, thus, be reappraised and certainly complemented to ensure a good management of nanotechnologies uncertain risks. Specialized consulting agencies, in this regard, provided a number of the leads that will be considered in this article.
