From Management to Law: French Business Schools in the Legal Education Market

How have French business schools succeeded in gaining a significant place in the training of business lawyers without offending the traditional law schools? This article focuses on the legal program at the Hautes études commerciales (HEC) Paris school in order to assess this question. It shows that their cautious foray into the legal education market is part of the triangular game between these elite schools, public universities, and lawyers. Analyzing the changes of their collusive transactions since the mid-1980s, the article finds a structural affinity between this multidisciplinary and selective training and the contemporary trends of global capitalism.
