The article presents a critical survey of publications on the purge and reintegration of German judges and prosecutors who had been in office during the Nazi regime. The study covers the period between the beginning of the denazification process, in 1945, and 1968, by when most of the judges and prosecutors active under the Nazi reign had retired. By analyzing the various stages of the administrative and penal denazification process the article attempts to shed some light on the nature of the denounced “renazification” of the judicial system in West Germany. In contrast to East Germany, where judges and prosecutors were meticulously scrutinized without the reintegration of the purged, Western Germany saw a massive return of the compromised in the legal system. If these judges and prosecutors did not undermine the development of a democratic legal system they refused to accept their responsibilities under the Nazi regime.
