The Œuvre of Georges Gurvitch through the Prism of Gender

In his Bill of Social Rights, Georges Gurvitch posited total equality between the sexes and a non-andocentric conception of human rights. Yet, his sociological writings never mention women. This paradox is all the more surprising when one considers that this cosmopolitan Russian lived in Germany, France, and the United States, countries where women’s rights and the feminist movement were strong and that the books he read insisted on the place of women in society. Additionally, he always supported the ideals of cooperative management. Finally, it was his left-wing idealism that made him view the world without singling out women and elaborating a form of “theoretical masculinism,” which has been neglected by scholars.
