L’auteur cherche à mesurer les effets de l’introduction du narcissisme et du moi sur la métapsychologie. Parmi tous ceux qui s’offrent alors à la réflexion il choisit de centrer son analyse sur trois thèmes : les effets sur la théorie de la pulsion et la question de l’introjection pulsionnelle dans le moi, la place de l’objet en regard du moi à partir de la question clinique de la mélancolie, enfin les conjonctures « narcissiques » qui conduisent aux formes extrêmes de l’anti-socialité.

The author tries to measure the effects on metapsychology of the introduction of narcissism and ego. Among the themes which are worth thinking about, he chooses to focus his analysis on three of them : the effects on the theory of instincts and the question of instinctual introjection within the ego, the place of the Object toward the ego stemming from the clinical question of melancholy, enventually the narcissistic « situations » leading to extreme forms of antisociality.
