L'auteur soutient la thèse selon laquelle le moi est une organisation dans laquelle différents niveaux coexistent avec leurs défenses et leurs transformations. L'auteur conçoit qu'une transformation générale du moi est possible par le travail analytique mais que cette transformation, si elle touche à la dynamique et à l'économique de l'organisation du moi, ne supprime jamais l'existence d'un niveau d'organisation au profit d'un autre. La tension qui est au travail dans la psyché et qui se retrouve dans l'investissement transférentiel de l'objet prend place entre deux grandes instances psychiques : le moi-réalité et le moi-narcissique.

The author defends the idea that the ego is made of different layers of organization that coexist with their own defenses and their transformations. The author believes a general transformation of the ego is possible through analytical work, but this transformation, if it concerns the dynamic and economic aspects of the ego's organization, never suppresses the existence of a particular level in regards to another. The tension at work within the psychic apparatus, which is also found in the investment of the object through transference, takes place between two important psychic instances : the reality-ego and the narcissistic-ego.
