Dans deux de ses ouvrages, Transformations et L’Attention et l’Interprétation, W. R. Bion développe une théorie de la résistance fondée sur l’hypothèse qu’elle est due à la peur des turbulences psychiques impliquées par le processus analytique pour autant qu’il vise à « devenir » soi-même et pas seulement à approfondir la connaissance de soi. La « transformation en C » vise à cette connaissance de soi, la « transformation en O » le devenir soi-même. C’est à la charnière entre ces deux types de transformation que Bion situe le problème des résistances à la psychanalyse.

In two of his works, Tranformations and Attention and Interpretation, W. R. Bion develops a theory of the resistance against psychoanalysis based on the hypothesis that resistance is due to the fear of the psychic turbulences entailed in the psychoanalytic process, as far as its aim is to help the patient to “become” himself/herself and not only to deepen a knowledge about himself/herself. The “transformation in K” aims at this knowledge, the “transformation in O” aims at “becoming oneself”. Bion places the issue of the resistances to psychoanalysis at the cusp of these two types of transformation.
