Cet article décrit la psychothérapie psychanalytique intensive d’un jeune enfant qui était né dans des circonstances potentiellement catastrophiques, qui, en outre, souffrit plus tard d’un accident médical sévère. Le dévouement des parents adoptifs et une intervention psychothérapeutique ont déclenché un développement impressionnant de ses capacités d’entrer en relation et de s’exprimer par le jeu et par le langage. Deux langages entrent en jeu dans la psychothérapie : le français qui était sa langue maternelle et l’anglais qu’il avait appris lorsque sa famille s’était installée au Royaume Uni. Le travail thérapeutique s’est déroulé dans un cadre hospitalier, ce qui a permis d’élaborer l’expérience qu’il avait d’avoir été hospitalisé, expérience profonde, de longue durée et douloureuse.

This paper describes intensive psychoanalytic therapy with a young child born in potentially catastrophic circumstances who also later suffer a severe medical accident. Devoted adoptive parents and psychotherapeutic intervention set in train impressive development in his capacity to relate and to express himself in play and language. Two languages feature in the therapy, French, his native language, and English which he learnt when his family moved to the UK. The work took place in a hospital setting which gave opportunities to work through his extensive, protracted and painful experience of being in hospital.
