En France, après l’effacement des provinces au temps d’une royauté devenue absolue, l’importance du fait régional a mis du temps à émerger pour enfin se concrétiser avec la régionalisation de 1982. Depuis, de nombreux textes législatifs ont modifié les compétences des régions et la façon dont elles peuvent les exercer. En outre, une diminution drastique de leur nombre en France métropolitaine a été mise en œuvre depuis 2016. Dans ce contexte, cette analyse se concentre sur trois questions : comment la France a-t-elle fini par entreprendre une régionalisation ? Comment considérer la cartographie des régions en France par rapport aux autres démocraties européennes ? Les compétences dont disposent les régions leurs donnent-elles de larges possibilités d’action ou, au contraire, faut-il noter un contraste entre leur vaste périmètre géographique et leur importance politique ?

In France, after the disappearance of the provinces at the time of a royalty that had become absolute, the importance of the regional fact took time to emerge to finally materialize with the regionalization of 1982. Since then, numerous legislative texts have modified the competences of the regions and the way in which they can exercise them. In addition, a drastic reduction in their number in metropolitan France has been implemented since 2016. In this context, this analysis focuses on three questions : how did France end up undertaking regionalization ? How can we consider the mapping of regions in France compared to other European democracies ? Do the competences available to the regions give them wide scope for action or, on the contrary, is there a contrast between their vast geographical perimeter and their political importance ?
