Le soutien diplomatique et militaire apporté par l’Iran aux chiites irakiens a conforté au pouvoir l’ancien Premier ministre Nouri al-Maliki au détriment de ses rivaux politiques. Son maintien a divisé la communauté chiite en même temps qu’il a braqué une partie des milices contre le pouvoir central. Bagdad a par ailleurs légitimé l’engagement de groupes chiites pour certains pro-iraniens aux côtés de l’armée irakienne dans la lutte contre Daech, une évolution sécuritaire qui pourrait hypothéquer l’unité du pays.

Iranian diplomatic and military support of Iraqi Shiites has consolidated former Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki’s power to the detriment of his political rivals. Maintaining it has split the Shiite community while pointing part of the militias against central government. Baghdad has also legitimized the involvement of Shiite groups, some of them pro-Iranian, alongside the Iraqi army in the fight against Daesh, a security evolution that could jeopardize the country’s unity.
