The Thirty Years War and the Peace of Westphalia: A Historiographical Assessment
Type de matériel :
16
Driven by a widespread renewal of national historiographies as well as questions that are relevant today, the historiography of the Thirty Years War has been radically redeveloped since the three-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of the Treaties of Westphalia in 1998. As a new anniversary dawns—the tricentennial of the beginning of the war in 2018—this article is intended to be a judicious and critical assessment of the current state of research on one of the rupture points in modern history, which French-speaking historians still know little about. It then begins to outline a reflection on the theme of pacification and present-day “nostalgia” or trauma, which shows that the history of this period is not sealed off from us.
