Conviviality and connivance in Isfahan? Jean-Baptiste Tavernier at the court of Shah Abbas II
Type de matériel :
29
In his Voyages, Jean-Baptiste Tavernier relates an extensive and joyous encounter with Shah Abbas in Isfahan in the mid-1660s, but was this meeting as convivial as the author would have us believe? By juxtaposing Tavernier’s account with Persian literary and artistic traditions, this article identifies a certain rivalry between the French merchant and his royal associate that is emblematic of the complex alliances binding the early modern Safavid, Mogul, and French empires.
