Four unpublished drawings by François Chauveau for Boileau’s Le Lutrin

The illustration of Le Lutrin, a poem included in Boileau’s Les Œuvres diverses du Sieur D***, is a source of enigmas that literary and bibliographical research has not, until now, been able to solve. Although, between 1674 and 1701, only two engravings by François Chauveau appear in the editions, the recent discovery of four original drawings intended to accompany the “mock-heroic” poem enriches our understanding of the collaboration between the poet and the artist. By featuring the active presence of an ancient textual palimpsest in the writing of Le Lutrin, the illustration confirms the major place of burlesque aesthetics in Boileau’s work.
