The chaplaincies of Canon Coste. Catholic reconstruction and ecclesiastical benefices in Montpellier at the end of Louis XIV’s reign

The career of Philippe Coste, canon of the collegial chapter of Saint-Sauveur in Montpellier, reveals the political and religious evolution of Bas-Languedoc in the aftermath of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Well integrated into the local power networks, he attempted by means of legal action to revive the chaplaincies that fell into disuse during the French Wars of Religion and that were accompanied by obituary pensions. The restoration of the former beneficial system encountered the opposition of landowners as well as the Tridentine ecclesiastical discipline, with whom the canon had numerous quarrels. It resulted in partial failure.
