Si Pierre Naville est connu en sociologie du travail pour ses écrits sur la qualification ou l’automation, cet article nous révèle un pan entier méconnu de ses travaux : la guerre et l’armée et leur place dans la société. Alors que ces thèmes ne suscitaient à l’époque que peu de considération de la part des sociologues, les analyses de P. Naville montrent combien les relations entre la guerre, la société et les armées sont complexes, et instructives pour comprendre le fonctionnement politique des sociétés modernes. L’article aborde successivement les thèmes de l’armée et de la guerre, en les resituant dans le parcours intellectuel de Pierre Naville. On y découvre alors une analyse de ces phénomènes, marquée par le souci didactique de définir la place de l’armée et le rôle de la guerre dans la société, d’un point de vue économique, politique et social. C’est une approche globale qui est recherchée, dans une logique de mise à jour des antagonismes et des contradictions inhérentes à un système, largement inspirée des analyses marxistes.

In so far Pierre Naville was known in the matter of sociology of labour, and his writings about qualification and automation. The present article reveals a major piece of his unveiled research : the war, the army, their situation amidst the society when theses themes not arouse much attention on behalf of sociologists. P. Naville demonstrated much the implications among war, the human and the military forces show an intricate complexity, and were part of the knowledge in relation with the political functioning of modern societies. The article deals in turn with the thematics of the military forces and of the war, linking them inside the intellectual route of P. Naville who reveals his capacity to analyse these phenomenons. The author shows a particular care for the didactic analysis so as to define the location of the armed forces and the impact of the war inside modern society in the viewpoint of economy, politics and sociology. It is a global approach through a logic of understanding antagonisms and contradictions inherent in a system which finds its inspiration to a great extent in marxist analysis.
