Cet article explore la cristallisation du soldat augmenté aux États-Unis, un concept qui vise non pas à repousser les limites humaines mais à s’en affranchir. Plus précisément, il analyse son émergence autour des attentats du 11 septembre 2001 au prisme de l’utopie technologique et du transhumanisme, dans un contexte sous-tendu par la menace bioterroriste et les difficultés rencontrées par l’armée américaine en Afghanistan et en Irak. L’étude se resserre ensuite sur son lieu de naissance, la DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), une institution née durant la guerre froide qui a pour objectif de produire de l’innovation radicale afin de garder un avantage stratégique sur l’adversaire. L’article se termine sur quelques exemples de programmes de recherche développés au sein de la DARPA qui font passage entre l’optimisation et l’augmentation du soldat.

This article explores the crystallization of the enhanced soldier in the United States, a concept that aims not to push back human limits but to free itself from them. More specifically, it analyzes the emergence of the enhanced soldier around the time of the attacks of September 11, 2001 through the prism of technological utopia and transhumanism, and in a context of the bioterrorist threat and the difficulties encountered by the American army in Afghanistan and Iraq. The study then focuses on the birthplace of the enhanced solider, namely the DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). The objective of this institution born during the Cold War is to produce radical innovation in order to maintain a strategic advantage over the adversary. The article concludes with some examples of research programs developed within DARPA that bridge optimization and soldier enhancement.
