Technological trajectory of digital tools for nitrogen fertilisation in France

This paper describes the technological trajectory of Digital Decision Support Tools (DDSTs) for farmers in France, based on the case of nitrogen fertilisation. We analyse two sets of interviews with DDSTs designers and distributors, conducted 12 years apart. Three facts emerge: i) the historical role of public policies (environmental and aerospace); ii) the diversity of actors (and their motivations) who invest in DDSTs; iii) the complexity of their integration and partnership strategies. This situation calls for further research on the capacity of the different actors in the agricultural innovation ecosystem to produce knowledge on the effectiveness of digital technologies.
